DESIGN

Kokutan is the name of the family house and the business. It means ‘burnt wood’. The house is cladded in wood which has a carbonised finish created from an ancient Japanese practise called ‘Shou sugi ban’ – this burns the wood surface to preserve it. Japanese design also influences the principles used in the growing, floristry and approach to planting. Inspired by a love of outdoor spaces, interiors and architecture, together with a background in fashion and styling, Steph’s diploma in garden and landscape design completes Kokutan’s bespoke offering. From improving the kerb appeal of your property, creating privacy or bringing more colour into a herbaceous border, commissions are always built around improving soil health and respond to the location. The aim is to work in harmony with nature using colour, form, texture and scent to consciously create healthy plants, flowers and gardens. A planting plan will be designed to meet your maintenance needs and garden conditions whilst also making a garden atmospheric and engaging to the senses.
